Conservation & Livelihood Sector

This Sector exists to build a Ngamiland society that is eco- sensitive guarantees equitable access to wealth creation opportunities, develop  a culture that places premium on the protection of the environment and indigenous knowledge as well as focusing attention of both public and private sector on issues that promotes sustainable use of natural resources in the development process.

Its general purpose is to advise and assist the NCONGO Board in ensuring that NCONGO is aware of, and it is appropriately responding to systematic institutional and societal trends and their impact on the environment.

The role of the conservation  and livelihoods sector is:

  1. Advocacy and lobbying
  2. Promote joint design and implementation of projects that identify and address environmental trends, issues and concerns
  3. Promote environmental mainstreaming across all NCONGO committees
  4. Build awareness, understanding and commitment to climate change adaptation and mitigation
  5. Facilitate communication and networking for improved lessons learnt and best practice dissemination
  6. Strengthen organizational capacity (government, planning and management

Okavango Jakotsha Community Trust

Okavango Jakotsha Community Trust is registered and Accountable Legal entity registered with the register of Deeds office on the 31st August 1999 under the Deeds number MA 199/99 protocol 307 to represent the communities of Etsha 13, Etsha 6, Etsha 1, Jao and Ikoga and associated homesteads under the jurisdiction of these village’s kgotlas.

Okavango Community Trust (OCT), a community based organization, administers the Duba and Vumbura land concessions totallying over 89 000 hectares (220 000 acres) that have been ceded by the Botswana Government to five villages just outside of the Okavango Delta. OCT represents the 5000 people residing in the 5 villages of Seronga, Gunitsoga, Eretsha, Betsha, and Gudigwa and oversees the project and directs the flow of funds.

Sankuyo Tshwaragano Management Trust

Sankuyo Village is 84km North of Maun. Located on GPS coordinates: S19’31.012 and E023’35.683. The Trust operates Kaziikini Campsite and Shandereka Cultural Village. The trust was legally registered in 1995 and has user rights over the concession areas NG 33 and NG 34.

Over the past few years, the Okavango Delta and Maun in particular, have become perceived as an expensive destination with many Overland Companies no longer stopping in Maun due to what are considered to be high rates for activities such as Mokoro Trails.
